Compassion by Lior & Nigel Westlake featuring Tinalley Quartet

“This new version of Compassion – for string quartet, piano, percussion and double bass – turned out to be wonderfully successful. It created a compact new propulsive energy and a more intimate relationship between instruments and voice.” – The Australian

Compassion was written by singer/songwriter/composer Lior and composer Nigel Westlake and premiered with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House in late 2013.

Compassion is based on seven ancient Hebrew and Arabic texts, written in response to the vicious and implacable cycle of violence in the Middle East. Lior’s gloriously soulful voice and Westlake’s radiant music achieve the seemingly impossible: the uniting of Islam and Judaism in a joyful celebration of compassion and its ability to bring people together across the divides of race and fear.

This chamber version of Compassion was premiered at the 2018 Adelaide Festival. The Octet version features some of Australia’s best musicians and offers the opportunity to take this inspiring work to venues around Australian in 2020.

The concert begins with Tinalley String Quartet performing Arvo Part’s Fratres, before moving in Compassion.

Chamber version of Compassion commissioned by Tinalley String Quartet with generous funding provided by Julian Burnside OA QC, Andrew and Theresa Dyer, Anonymous and the UKARIA Foundation.
