November is an exciting month for jazz lovers. . . the brand new New England Big Band hits the stage on November 16th for one night only! Come along early at 6pm and enjoy a wine or Pimms cocktail and channel memories of big band greats such as the Duke, the Count and Glen Miller while hearing some great big band music.

The New England Big Band is the baby of multi-instrumentalist NECOM teacher Paul Marshall who has gathered some of Armidale’s best musicians together to play contemporary big band music as well as two classic pieces featuring a jazz vocalist.

Big Bands originated in 1910’s and developed through the 20’s and 30’s to dominate the jazz scene in the 40’s with the likes of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Glen Miller leading their own groups, and Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald as leading figures.

The standard instrumentation starts with a tight rhythm section, piano, bass and drums, then trombones and trumpets for power and colour, then a flourish of saxophones to finish it off. The big band form is still evolving, particularly under the baton of Gordon Goodwin (eg: Incredibles soundtrack) but is always exciting to listen to, try not to tap your feet!

STOP PRESS!
In the spirit of all things jazz, AMTA (Armidale Music Teachers Association) and NECOM are offering an opportunity for younger players to learn about playing jazz in a pop-up jazz rehearsal on November 13th, 5:00-6:00pm. Potentially, this will lead into a more permanent group for 2020. Check out more details in ‘What’s On’.
