Commitment to Child Safety at NECOM

Our commitment to children and young people

New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM) is committed to providing safe environments for all children and young people.

NECOM supports the active participation of children and young persons in the programs, activities and services we offer.

NECOM provides a range of ways to allow children to provide feedback or raise concerns. Including but not limited to listening to their views, respecting what they say and involving them when decisions are made that directly pertains to them.

Our commitment to parents, carers, families, and their communities

NECOM is committed to providing safe environments for all children.  It is the role of the organisation to support all NECOM personnel to support all children and will particularly support those children that are of current concern or at ‘Risk of Significant Harm’.

NECOM will maintain a rigorous and consistent recruitment, screening and selection process to ensure that children and young people are safe while in the presence of NECOM staff.

Our commitment to being a child safe organisation

NECOM will ensure that all staff are aware of their responsibilities in relation to child protection by:

  1. Providing annual training and regular information sessions on child protection issues.

  2. Providing staff with relevant information and updates from child protection agencies.

  3. Encouraging staff to access counsel and resources if necessary to support a young person.

We offer individual and shared lessons across a range of instruments including musicianship.

All lessons focus on developing technique, musicality, enjoyment and performance confidence.

Choral Programs

Choral Programs run across the week for all ages.

From the youngest singers to adults, our award winning choirs cater for everyone.

Early Childhood

From birth to age 8, our Early Childhood teachers lead specialist music classes at NECOM as well as in Preschools and Early Learning settings across the Armidale & Uralla area.

Music Therapy

NECOM offers personalised Music Therapy programs for children and adults, tailored to each client’s needs.

We provide individual and group sessions for people with disabilities, brain injuries, age-related conditions, nuerodiversity and in residential care settings.

Endangered Instruments

Some instruments are considered ‘endangered’ due to declining student participation — yet they play a vital role in bands, orchestras, and ensembles. NECOM may have support available for students wishing to learn these special instruments.

These include:

  • Bassoon

  • Trombone

  • Oboe

  • French Horn

  • Double Bass

School Programs

NECOM provides classroom music, instrumental tuition, bands, ensembles, and choral programs, led by experienced educators and professional musicians.

Through its acclaimed Chamber Music in Schools tours, NECOM also brings high-quality live performances to regional and outreach communities.

New England Sings!

New England Sings is a free, biennial regional choral program that brings together diverse students to collaborate on new works. This amazing project fosters creativity and community while earning national recognition through multiple APRA AMCOS Music Awards.
