Eisteddfod Choral Report

NECOM choirs performed at the annual Armidale Eisteddfod on the 15/16 May with many fine performances and some wonderful results. The adjudicator was impressed with the collegial atmosphere at the choral events and commented on the cross-pollination of students and teachers between the choirs in our community. One of the highlights was a performance by the music teachers in town in the non-competitive section at Choir Night, bound to become an annual event. The Minisingers were excited (I mean REALLY excited) to kick off the Eisteddfod with a wonderful performance of I See Red in the K-2 non-competitive section. This was followed up with performances by Cantilena Singers in which they were awarded the Armidale Dumaresq Council Perpetual Shield for the K-6 unison section and the Paul Lamb Memorial Shield for the K-6 two-part section. Cantilena Chorale performed Who Can Sail Without the Wind and J’Entends Le Moulin placing first in the section. The choral evening was an extraordinary showcase of music making in the Armidale community. All the school choirs were exceptional and we were treated to a wealth of different genres with the performances. The New England Singers placed 3rd in the 19 years & Under section performing Home in d’Rock conducted by Jonathan Bruhl. The NE Singers Chamber Choir were also conducted by our student conductors for 2018, Jonathan Bruhl and Lucy Quast and were awarded first place. This was followed by the New England Championship with some fabulous performances by all the other competitors. The New England Singers were awarded first place pulling off the extremely challenging Miniyama Nayo. Our choral conductors did a sensational job with the choirs this year and we are so fortunate to have the calibre of these musicians working within our community: Bekk Baumgartner and Nicole Mackson (Minisingers); Connie Dunham and Warwick Dunham (Cantilena & Cantilena Chorale); Leanne Roobol, Phil Oxley and Robyn Bradley (New England Singers & Chamber Choir).
